Egypt's Heatwave to Ease Slightly, but High Humidity to Persist

Egypt is set to experience a slight reprieve from the current heatwave, with temperatures expected to decrease marginally starting Sunday, according to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority. Dr. Manar Ghanem, a meteorologist with the authority, stated that the maximum temperature in Greater Cairo is forecast to be around 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, a drop from the recent highs of 37 to 38 degrees.

Temperatures will see a slight decrease starting tomorrow, Sunday, with the maximum in Greater Cairo recording around 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, compared to 37 and 38 degrees in the past period, with continued high humidity and a feeling of heat.

However, the relief will be tempered by persistently high humidity levels. Ghanem explained that the perceived temperature, or "feels like" temperature, will reach around 36 to 37 degrees Celsius due to this humidity. While conditions are expected to improve slightly during the night, especially in open areas, daytime temperatures will remain hot. This anticipated improvement is not the most significant change, as a more noticeable drop in temperatures, coupled with reduced humidity, is not expected until the latter half of September.

Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Sea remains turbulent due to strong winds, with speeds reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour on Saturday. This has caused waves to rise between 3 and 4.5 meters, particularly in deeper waters. These conditions have disrupted maritime navigation and led to the closure of several beaches and ports. The Central Administration for Tourism and Beaches in Alexandria has raised a red flag, prohibiting swimming and other sea activities until further notice.

The expected decrease in the coming few days will not represent the biggest improvement in the weather condition.

Ghanem indicated that a gradual improvement in sea conditions is expected from Sunday, with wave heights potentially decreasing to between two and three meters. However, the Mediterranean Sea, especially its western parts, will remain rough and unsuitable for maritime activities. Wind speeds are predicted to decrease further by Monday afternoon, leading to calmer seas by Tuesday. Authorities are urging the public to adhere to the instructions of rescue teams and avoid entering the sea when a red flag is raised.
