Egypt seeks to model ecotourism in Nabq reserve

Egypt is developing a new model for managing its nature reserves, aiming to boost ecotourism and attract investment, with Nabq Nature Reserve in South Sinai designated as the pilot project. Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad reviewed the integrated management model, which seeks to address existing gaps in protected area management through a public-private partnership.

The proposed vision transforms Nabq into a sustainable ecotourism destination, balancing the protection of sensitive ecosystems with community empowerment and responsible investment. Awad highlighted Nabq's exceptional environmental and tourism value, noting its combination of marine and desert ecosystems, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and unique biodiversity.

Egypt's strategy relies on diversifying its tourism offerings, which already include cultural, environmental, medical, beach, sports, and conference tourism. The country aims to attract 30 million tourists by 2030. The Nabq model's pillars include establishing a single destination management entity to coordinate activities, improving management efficiency, and ensuring a unified development vision.

Local communities will be integrated as key partners, with a focus on providing sustainable employment opportunities. The model also aims to attract capital committed to sustainability standards and long-term returns. Nabq Nature Reserve, covering about 600 square kilometers, is known for its biodiversity and natural wealth, offering various diving activities.

The implementation roadmap includes a three-stage process: establishing the institutional entity and infrastructure in the first two years, activating major investments and community programs in the second stage, and achieving financial sustainability and project expansion in the final stage.
