Eid-el-Kabir: Lagos warns against sale of rams on highways

Lagos State officials are urging traders to refrain from displaying and selling rams and other livestock on the state's highways and road medians as the Eid-el-Kabir festival approaches. The directive, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, aims to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the city and safeguard public well-being.

Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that the existing laws prohibiting street trading remain in effect. While acknowledging the seasonal demand for livestock, he stressed that sales must not compromise the state's appearance or the health and safety of its residents. The government is committed to ensuring that festive activities do not lead to environmental degradation.

While it is not unusual for traders to take advantage of the season to market and sell livestock animals, it must be done without defacing the state or compromising the wellness and well-being of Lagosians.

In addition to the sales ban on public thoroughfares, the commissioner appealed to Muslim faithful to manage waste generated during the celebrations responsibly. Proper bagging and disposal of refuse at designated points for collection by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) are crucial for maintaining sanitation. Wahab assured citizens that the ministry and LAWMA are dedicated to eliminating refuse heaps across the state.

The government reiterated its firm stance against environmental infractions, including the erection of illegal stalls, indiscriminate dumping of waste, and maintaining unsanitary surroundings. Wahab stressed that environmental sustainability and socio-economic well-being are achievable only through consistent adherence to proper sanitation practices. He urged residents to utilize designated parks and relaxation centers during the festivities and to voluntarily comply with all state environmental laws, ensuring a cleaner environment throughout the celebration period.
