Eight Boaters, Including Four Children, Rescued by Helicopter After Being Trapped by Tide in Arcachon

A dramatic rescue operation unfolded on the Bassin d'Arcachon when eight pleasure boaters, four of them children, found themselves stranded by the tide on a sandbank near Île aux Oiseaux. The group's zodiac ran aground around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

The Civil Security helicopter, Dragon 33, was quickly deployed to the scene. A rescuer was winched down to assist the stranded boaters, who were then individually hoisted to safety. The incident highlighted the significant risks associated with the strong tidal ranges in the Bassin d'Arcachon, where sandbanks can rapidly isolate vessels as the tide recedes.

Among the rescued, an 82-year-old man, weakened by the ordeal, and his 44-year-old daughter were transported to the Arcachon health center for medical evaluation. The remaining six individuals from the boat were safely returned to their homes.

This event serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of heeding tide warnings in coastal areas. The swift action of the rescue services prevented a potentially more serious outcome for the stranded group.
