Eight hectares of forest burn in Germany's Sauerland region; firefighting continues

Firefighters are continuing their efforts to combat a significant forest fire in the Sauerland region of Germany, near Sundern. The blaze, which broke out on Wednesday, has consumed an area of approximately 80,000 square meters (8 hectares) of forest land. The fire is located in steep and difficult-to-access terrain, complicating the firefighting operations.

While the fire is now under control, it remains unextinguished. A considerable contingent of around 100 emergency personnel, including specialists in forest fire fighting and members of the Technical Relief Agency (THW), are currently on site. Their primary task is to extinguish repeatedly flaring embers and ensure the fire does not reignite.

The fire began around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. By the time firefighters could begin their work, a large area was already engulfed in flames. To aid in extinguishing the fire, a firefighting helicopter has been repeatedly collecting water from the nearby Sorpesee since Thursday. Additionally, heavy forestry equipment has been used to create firebreaks, preventing the flames from spreading further into the forest.

At its peak, approximately 250 emergency personnel were involved in the operation. Despite the ongoing efforts, an end to the firefighting work is not yet foreseeable. The duration and extent of the damage are still being assessed, with the steep and remote location posing ongoing challenges for the crews.
