Eight killed in Benue community attack after burial

Eight people died and five were injured when armed assailants attacked the Otukpo Nobi community in Benue State, Nigeria, early Sunday. The assault happened shortly after the burial of an octogenarian, Adaje Okoh. The attackers also set fire to thatched houses and a motorcycle.

At about 6:00 a.m., the Command received a distress call reporting that armed assailants invaded the community shortly after the successful conclusion of the wake and burial rites of the late Mr Adaje Okoh, an octogenarian.

Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, stated that Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu led tactical teams to the community to restore order. An investigation is underway, and injured victims are receiving medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a hospital morgue.

The attackers reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the death of eight persons, while five others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Some thatched houses and a motorcycle were also set ablaze during the attack.

Commissioner Nwadiogbu condemned the attack and vowed to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible. Additional security forces have been deployed to the affected area and other vulnerable locations to prevent further violence. The police urged residents to remain calm, avoid vigilantism, and provide information to aid the investigation.

The command had commenced an investigation into the incident.

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Benue State chapter, has denied any involvement of its members in the attack. The police commissioner extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured residents that adequate security measures are in place.
