Eight South Korean Students Arrested Trying to Enter U.S. Air Base

South Korean police arrested eight university students on Wednesday after they attempted to illegally enter the U.S. Osan Air Base, located approximately 50 kilometers south of Seoul. The U.S. military confirmed the students were handed over to the police.

The students are reportedly members of the Korean University Students Progressive Union, which had organized a protest outside the air base the previous day. Images of the demonstration were shared on social media. According to a U.S. military statement, the eight individuals were apprehended after "attempting to illegally enter the Osan Air Base through the main entrance."

South Korean police stated that the students were taken into custody and, during interrogations, refused to provide any statements. The students' protest was aimed at condemning what they described as an "interruption" by the U.S. military of a planned chip manufacturing hub project in Gwangju. South Korea's chip manufacturing sector, particularly companies like SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, has significantly benefited from the artificial intelligence boom.

The Gwangju air base site was selected to host a new industrial complex valued at 800 trillion won (nearly 488 billion euros), intended for these two companies. Last month, the presidency announced that Seoul and Washington had begun consultations regarding the potential relocation of the airport, parts of which are currently used by the U.S. military. Approximately 28,500 American soldiers are stationed in South Korea to bolster the country's defenses against North Korean military threats.
