EITI assessors arrive to evaluate Nigeria’s oil, gas reforms

Assessors from the Global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) have arrived in Nigeria to evaluate the nation's progress in reforming its oil, gas, and mining sectors. This validation mission, part of the 2026 EITI Validation Exercise, is crucial for Nigeria to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and accountability.

The assessors will spend from August 10 to August 14 conducting a thorough quality assurance assessment. Their work involves extensive consultations with a wide array of stakeholders. These include government institutions, members of the National Assembly, representatives from oil and gas companies, civil society organizations, development partners, anti-corruption agencies, host communities, and the media.

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative announces the arrival of the Global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Validation Assessors as part of the ongoing 2026 EITI Validation Exercise which commenced on July 1st 2026. The presence of the EITI Mission in Nigeria marks a significant stage in Nigeria’s 2026 EITI Validation and forms part of the global EITI Validation process.

Key figures expected to engage with the mission include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. The consultations aim to provide the assessors with direct feedback on Nigeria's implementation of the EITI Standard, ongoing reforms, and persistent challenges within the extractive sector. The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) described the arrival as a significant milestone in the ongoing validation process.
