EKRE, Centre Party, and Isamaa Form New Coalition in Pärnu, Estonia

Pärnu, Estonia, is poised for a new political alignment as a coalition of the Conservative People's Party (EKRE), the Centre Party (Keskerakond), and Isamaa prepares to take control of the city government. This move follows weeks of speculation and political maneuvering after the previous coalition's perceived collapse.

The incoming EKREIKE coalition will command a majority in the 39-seat Pärnu City Council, securing 21 seats. Their position could be further strengthened by the support of an independent councilor who has indicated plans to run under the Centre Party banner in the upcoming elections. This bloc aims to establish a stable governing majority to lead the summer resort city.

In the big picture, there is nothing in the current coalition agreement that we would want to fundamentally change. There is nothing that needs to be changed or redone. Rather, the issue has been interpersonal squabbling in the council.

Coalition negotiations are actively underway, with the three parties working to finalize a new cooperation agreement. While no strict deadlines have been set, Isamaa representatives have indicated that the core principles of the previous coalition agreement are largely satisfactory, suggesting that the new document might be an updated version rather than a complete overhaul. The focus, according to Isamaa, has been on resolving interpersonal disputes within the council rather than fundamental policy disagreements.

Meanwhile, the Reform Party had also extended an invitation to form a coalition, targeting Isamaa, the Pärnu Ühendab electoral list, and the Südamega Pärnu electoral list, along with a representative from Parempoolsed. However, Isamaa stated its commitment to ongoing talks with EKRE and the Centre Party, deferring consideration of alternatives. The electoral lists and Parempoolsed announced they would respond later in the week, but following the Centre Party's official confirmation of talks with EKRE and Isamaa, they declared their decision to pursue negotiations with the Reform Party and invited Isamaa to join them.
