El Niño-linked fire leaves family of seven homeless in Chimbu

A family of seven in Oroma Village, Chimbu, has been left devastated after a fire completely destroyed their home on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The blaze, which occurred between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, consumed their house and everything within it, leaving the family with nothing.

The fire's timing was particularly unfortunate, as the parents were away from home attending to essential chores. Ward Councillor Ismael Owa explained that the parents were in the garden and at the river fetching water, respectively. These tasks are made more time-consuming and arduous by the ongoing El Niño conditions, which have led to prolonged dry spells.

When the couple and their five children returned, they found their home reduced to ashes. The loss is extensive, encompassing not only personal belongings but also crucial items like school books and bags for the children, important documents, clothing, bedding, utensils, working tools, and even K470 in cash savings. The family is currently seeking shelter with relatives in the village.

Community leaders are now urgently calling for assistance from various entities, including the Simbu Provincial Disaster Office, Chuave DDA, churches, NGOs, and the public. The family's immediate needs include food, clothing, shelter materials, and support for the children's schooling to ensure they can return to class. The incident highlights the vulnerability of homes left unattended during extended periods, a risk amplified by the current climate conditions.
