El Salvador advances in artificial intelligence with ANIA appointment

El Salvador is making significant strides in artificial intelligence, a field where the Central American nation is placing ambitious bets. Beyond its existing applications in healthcare, administrative processes, and education, the country is pushing forward with new initiatives, including the strategic appointment of Ginger Luckey Gaetz to lead its National Agency for Artificial Intelligence (ANIA).

Gaetz's role as strategic advisor, announced on July 20, will be crucial in connecting ANIA with key partners. Her mission is to expand the agency's international network, linking it with top-tier ecosystems in the United States, including business partners and elite universities. The goal is to cultivate high-impact talent and foster the creation of startups, ensuring El Salvador stays at the cutting edge of global technological innovation.

ANIA announced Gaetz's appointment on social media, welcoming her with a message stating she would "provide high-level leadership across ANIA’s entire portfolio." The agency emphasized her focus on expanding its international network to "connect the agency with top-tier ecosystems in the U.S., business partners, and elite university pipelines to foster the creation of high-impact talent and startups." Gaetz expressed her honor in joining the team, stating, "I am deeply honored to partner with ANIA to help accelerate this momentum. Let’s build!"

Stacy Herbert, president of the National Bitcoin Agency, highlighted the significance of Gaetz's appointment, noting it occurred just two weeks after El Salvador joined Pax Silica, an initiative focused on securing critical mineral and energy supply chains and developing semiconductors and AI. Herbert asserted, "We operate under a standard of absolute excellence and only employ top-tier professionals."
