Elderly cyclist dies after collision with truck in Taichung

An elderly woman has died following a traffic accident in Taichung City early Wednesday morning. The victim, identified as an 82-year-old woman surnamed Chang, was riding her bicycle when she collided with a small truck at an intersection.

The incident took place around 6:11 a.m. at the intersection of Fuxing Road and Minsheng Road in the South District. Reports suggest that the woman may not have followed proper procedures for a left turn, leading to the collision with the truck, which was traveling in the same direction.

The impact of the collision was severe, with the woman being thrown from her bicycle and landing on the ground. Emergency services responded quickly, providing immediate aid and transporting her to the hospital. Despite all efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the truck, a 50-year-old man surnamed Hsieh, stated that the traffic light was green and he did not see the cyclist until the last moment, reacting too late to avoid the crash. Preliminary checks confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The truck's windshield sustained significant spiderweb cracks, indicating the force of the impact. The detailed cause of the accident and the allocation of fault are currently under investigation by authorities.
