Elderly Jamaican man dies after alleged beating by grandson

A 68-year-old man has died in Jamaica's St. Elizabeth parish, a week after a family dispute allegedly led to him being beaten by his grandson. Lawrence Smith, a resident of Middlesex, succumbed to his injuries at Black River Hospital on Monday evening.

The incident occurred on August 3 when Smith reportedly intervened in an altercation. He witnessed his grandson squeezing his granddaughter's throat and stepped in to stop it. According to police, the grandson then allegedly armed himself with a piece of lumber and struck Smith multiple times on his left hand, right arm, and ribs.

Following the assault, the suspect fled the scene. Smith, complaining of severe pain, went to the Lacovia Police Station to report the incident. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital, where he passed away. Head of the St. Elizabeth division, Superintendent Coleridge Minto, stated that police will continue to increase domestic violence interventions within communities.
