Elderly man nearly loses $170,000 in attempted property scam, police intervention saves savings

Taipei police successfully prevented a 72-year-old man from losing his retirement savings after he attempted to withdraw NT$4.2 million (approximately $170,000 USD) from a bank. The elderly man, identified by the surname Fang, initially told bank staff the large sum was intended for a down payment on an apartment.

During the bank's routine 'careful questioning' process, Fang's story began to unravel. When pressed for details about the property, such as its location, age, or whether a formal sales contract had been signed, he became evasive and could not provide clear answers. He then changed his story, claiming the money was actually for his son living overseas.

Officers from the Jingmei Police Station, alerted by the bank, arrived at the scene. They patiently listened to Fang's contradictory accounts. Recognizing the pattern of a common scam, where victims are coached to provide evasive answers to bank staff, the police attempted to reason with him. However, Fang remained insistent on withdrawing the funds.

In a moment of direct intervention, an officer remarked, "You won't stop until you hit the wall, will you?" This pointed question seemed to resonate with Fang, causing him to pause and reflect. The officer's words, combined with further analysis of the inconsistencies and patient explanation from both the police and bank staff, finally made him realize he might be falling victim to a scam.

Ultimately, Fang abandoned his plan to withdraw the entire amount. He only took a small sum for daily expenses, expressing gratitude to the police and bank employees for their timely intervention and for helping him protect his life savings from potential fraud.
