Elderly woman loses fortune in elaborate scam

Authorities in the Mansfeld-Südharz district are issuing a stern warning after a sophisticated scam left a 75-year-old woman with financial losses in the mid-five figures. The victim was targeted by a caller who falsely identified himself as a member of the burglary unit.

The imposter informed the woman that she was one of 37 individuals deemed to be at immediate risk of a theft. The police report indicated that the woman was subjected to significant psychological pressure during the call. The scammer then instructed her to place her cash and valuables into a cooking pot and hand them over to an accomplice who would arrive to collect them.

Tragically, while still on the phone with the fraudster, the woman heard a knock at her door. She proceeded to hand over her possessions to an unidentified man, falling victim to the elaborate deception. Police are reiterating their advice: law enforcement agencies never request large sums of money over the phone. Residents are urged never to admit strangers into their homes and to refrain from disclosing personal financial details during unsolicited phone calls.
