Elected deputy Milagros Eulate dies following earthquakes in La Guaira

Milagros Eulate, who was elected as a deputy to Venezuela's National Assembly in 2015 and was a prominent leader of the Acción Democrática (AD) party in La Guaira state, has died. Her passing occurred in the aftermath of powerful earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.

The National Assembly confirmed Eulate's death via a post on X, expressing condolences and highlighting her dedicated political career and contributions to the coastal region. The institution remembered her "vocation of service, leadership, and firm dedication to her region" as leaving an "indelible legacy."

Eulate's death comes as the toll from the earthquakes continues to rise. Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela's acting president, reported that the seismic events have resulted in 589 fatalities and 2,980 injuries. La Guaira state, a coastal region, has been one of the areas most severely impacted, with over 100 buildings collapsing and an estimated 70,000 families affected.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, though the exact number of people saved remains unspecified. The region's main airport, Maiquetía, has temporarily suspended operations due to earthquake-related damage. In response to the ongoing crisis, authorities have deployed 11,500 security personnel to La Guaira to maintain order and ensure public safety amidst the devastation.
