Election 2026: Green Party unveils $980m plan for new public energy company Kiwipower

The Green Party in New Zealand has unveiled an ambitious plan to create a new, publicly owned electricity company named Kiwipower. This initiative is a cornerstone of their election policy, aiming to reduce household power costs and significantly expand the use of renewable energy sources across the country.

Central to the proposal is a substantial financial commitment of $980 million, allocated over a four-year period. This funding is earmarked to establish and operate Kiwipower, driving its mission to make energy more affordable and accessible while accelerating the transition to sustainable power generation.

Co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick officially launched the energy policy at the Gasworks Museum in Dunedin. The announcement positions Kiwipower as a key solution to current energy challenges, reflecting the Green Party's focus on environmental sustainability and economic relief for consumers.
