Election 2026: Greens propose $2.4b funding to back ‘critical’ marae

New Zealand's Green Party is campaigning to establish a significant $2.44 billion trust dedicated to supporting marae, which the party views as vital infrastructure.

Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson emphasized the critical role marae play in communities, particularly in responding to weather emergencies and providing essential support. She argued that these cultural centers need stable and certain funding to continue their important work effectively.

The proposed initiative, to be named the Te Rangatiratanga Trust, would be governed and owned by hapū, ensuring indigenous leadership and control over the resources. This move highlights the Green Party's commitment to strengthening Māori communities and preserving cultural heritage.
