Elon Musk on track to become world's first trillionaire

Elon Musk is poised to become the first trillionaire in history, a financial milestone unprecedented in the global economy. His current holdings, including stocks and options in Tesla, are valued at approximately $273 billion. However, this figure could surge dramatically if the upcoming initial public offering (IPO) of his aerospace and artificial intelligence company, SpaceX, proceeds as planned.

Should SpaceX's IPO be successful, Musk's wealth could increase by an estimated $841 billion. He reportedly owns nearly half of SpaceX, which is valued at around $1.77 trillion. It is important to note that this wealth is largely "on paper" and depends on investor valuations of Tesla and SpaceX, rather than liquid cash.

A trillion dollars is equivalent to one million million dollars, an amount practically impossible to spend within a normal lifetime. Even spending $1 million every hour, every day, would take over 100 years to deplete a trillion dollars. To put this into perspective, Musk's projected wealth surpasses the economies of 20 countries, including Taiwan, Ireland, Sweden, Singapore, and his native South Africa.

Furthermore, Musk's potential net worth exceeds the GDP of Manhattan, the financial heart of New York City, which was just over $1 trillion in 2024. It also surpasses the estimated total value of all properties in Houston, a major US oil and gas hub, valued at approximately $879 billion. Even the total value of all new cars purchased in the US in 2025, estimated at around $789 billion, falls short of Musk's projected fortune.
