Emergency Crews Respond After Train Hits Car at Mayo Crossing

Emergency services are responding after a train struck a car at a user-operated crossing outside Ballyhaunis in County Mayo.

The 6:15 p.m. service from Dublin’s Heuston station to Westport hit the car shortly before 9 p.m. The vehicle had several occupants. Gardaí said officers were at the scene of a serious traffic incident at Kiltybo, and the road was closed with local diversions in place.

Irish Rail said it was arranging bus transfers for affected passengers. The company warned that services to and from Westport could face significant disruption on Friday morning.

The collision was the second incident on the Westport line that day involving a road vehicle and a train at a crossing. At about 4 p.m., a train struck a tractor as it attempted to cross the railway near Tullamore in County Offaly. One person went to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Services in both directions were suspended, and passengers were taken by bus to Athlone to board other trains. Irish Rail said trains would remain suspended between Portarlington and Tullamore in both directions until further notice.
