Emir of Gumel dies in Cairo

The Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, has died in Cairo, Egypt.

Former Communications and Digital Economy Minister Isa Ali Pantami announced the death in a condolence message shared on Thursday. The monarch ruled the Gumel Emirate from Dec. 16, 1980, until his death on Sept. 3, 2026.

Pantami described him as a distinguished scholar, a source of wisdom and a father to all. He said the emir devoted his life to serving his people, promoting peace and education, and preserving cultural values.

“On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and good people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation,” Pantami said.

He prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul and for strength for the emir’s family and the people of Gumel and Jigawa State.
