Emotional Taylor steps on to the scales one final time

Katie Taylor became emotional during the final weigh-in of her professional boxing career as thousands of supporters gathered at Trinity College in Dublin.

Taylor and Flora Pili both came in just under the 10-stone, or 63.5-kilogram, light-welterweight limit for Saturday’s undisputed title fight at a sold-out Croke Park. Taylor has never missed weight in her 26-fight career.

The 40-year-old two-weight undisputed champion was greeted by fans who have followed her since her Olympic gold medal in 2012. Taylor, who has helped break barriers for women in and out of the ring, received an especially strong welcome at Trinity College, where women were not allowed to study until 1975.

Taylor rarely shows much emotion during fight week, but she choked up while delivering her final messages. “I’m so excited. I’ve been saying all week how grateful I am for this opportunity. She thanked supporters for carrying her through the London and Rio Olympics and her professional career. “I can’t wait to step in there and I want to put in a performance worthy of everyone’s support,” Taylor said. The fight is scheduled for Saturday evening, with the title belts now the focus for both fighters.
