Employee sentenced to six months for stealing restaurant cash to fund gambling

A restaurant employee who stole cash from two eateries to raise gambling money received a six-month prison sentence from the Goyang branch of the Uijeongbu District Court.

The employee first entered the restaurant where he worked in the early morning and took 200,000 won from the cash register. Investigators said he knew the door’s keypad code, allowing him to enter without difficulty.

That same night, he broke into another restaurant after it had closed and stole another 200,000 won. Police said he tore through a rear tent door with a knife and struck the entrance handle with a hammer, damaging it.

The court convicted him of nighttime building trespass and special larceny. Judge Nam Shin-hyang said the offenses had a serious character because he targeted both the restaurant where he worked and another branch to obtain gambling funds. The court also considered that the victims had not forgiven him, along with other sentencing factors.
