"En el camino" to represent Mexico at the Oscars, "Moscas" at the Goyas

David Pablos's film "En el camino" has been chosen by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (AMACC) to represent Mexico at the upcoming Academy Awards. Meanwhile, Fernando Eimbcke's "Moscas" will vie for the Goya Awards in 2027. The decision, announced Tuesday, allows Pablos's feature film to formally compete for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category.

Both films have enjoyed successful runs at international festivals. "En el camino" premiered in 2025 at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received the award for Best Film in the Horizons section and the Queer Lion Award. The film, starring Víctor Prieto and Osvaldo Sánchez, currently leads the nominations for the Ariel Awards in major categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

Pablos's camera focuses on making diverse stories visible, particularly the realities of the LGBT+ community, as he did with "El baile de los 41" and continues with "En el camino." The film portrays the story of a young gay man traveling on the harsh roads of Mexico's border. It took the director ten years to bring this film to fruition, drawing on research and interviews with truckers who face a heteronormative world where homosexuality is still judged and punished.

"Moscas" premiered internationally at the Berlinale 2026, competing for the Golden Bear. Eimbcke returns to black and white, his signature style from "Temporada de patos" (2004), with this feature filmed in Mexico City that captures everyday elements of illness and grief through the eyes of young Cristian, played by Bastian Escobar. Eimbcke's film could compete at the 41st Goya Awards in early February, while "En el camino" will have its chance at the 99th Oscars on March 14, 2027.
