Energie Cottbus loses final friendly 2-4 to Werder Bremen before Bundesliga return

FC Energie Cottbus concluded their preparations for the upcoming season with a 2-4 loss to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in their final test match. The game, played over two 60-minute halves, served as a crucial warm-up before Cottbus's return to the 2. Bundesliga after a twelve-year absence.

Energie Cottbus took an early lead in the 6th minute through Tolcay Ciğerci, who was instrumental in the team's promotion last season, scoring 17 goals. However, Werder Bremen responded strongly, with Salim Musah leveling the score in the 31st minute. Samuel Mbangula then put the visitors ahead just before halftime in the 45th minute.

In the second half, Paul Erevbenagie extended Bremen's lead in the 103rd minute. Cottbus captain Axel Borgmann, returning to the field for the first time since suffering from pubic bone inflammation, managed to pull one back in the 112th minute. However, Bremen sealed their victory with a final goal from Chuki in the 120th minute.

Notably, Borgmann's appearance marked his comeback after a significant injury. New signing Leonardo Bittencourt also played against his former club, starting the match and missing a key opportunity early on. FC Energie Cottbus will officially begin their 2. Bundesliga campaign on August 9th, hosting Hannover 96.
