England beaten by Australia to netball bronze

England's netball aspirations for a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games were dashed as they fell 68-50 to world number one side Australia. The defeat came just a day after a frustrating semi-final loss to New Zealand, leaving the Roses unable to rally for a podium finish.

Australia, known as the Diamonds, entered the bronze medal match recovering from a significant upset. They had been stunned by Jamaica in their own semi-final, a match that ended their streak of reaching every Commonwealth final and winning the tournament four times. This unexpected loss gave them less recovery time than England.

Despite a lively start where England's captain Fran Williams applied pressure, leading to a missed shot by Australia's Kiera Austin, the Diamonds found their rhythm. They overturned an early deficit to lead 19-11 by the end of the first quarter. England struggled to contain Australia's forward-passing options, and the team in green and gold capitalized with devastating effect.

In the second period, England's side, coached by Anna Stembridge, showed signs of fatigue against Australia's established shooting partnership. A loose pass from Williams allowed Austin to extend Australia's lead to 28-16, a margin they maintained to finish the half 35-24 ahead. Although England showed a brief resurgence in the third quarter with the introduction of Eleanor Cardwell, bringing the score closer, Australia ultimately proved too strong, securing the bronze medal.
