England beaten by New Zealand in netball semi-final

England's netball aspirations for Commonwealth Games gold were dashed on Saturday as they suffered a 61-54 defeat to a formidable New Zealand side in the semi-finals.

The Roses, who were aiming to replicate their 2018 gold medal success, will now contest the bronze medal match. Despite moments of strong play and a rally in the second quarter, England ultimately fell short against the prowess and height advantage of the Silver Ferns, particularly their dominant shooter Grace Nweke.

New Zealand established an early lead, finishing the first quarter 16-11 ahead. Although England managed to narrow the gap to 25-21 by halftime, with Nweke missing a shot just before the break, New Zealand extended their lead to nine points with 15 minutes remaining.

England fought back to reduce the deficit to seven by the final whistle, but the damage was done. They now face the challenge of regrouping for Sunday's bronze medal match. New Zealand, meanwhile, progresses to the gold medal final, their first since 2014, as they pursue their first Commonwealth title since 2010.
