England captaincy could be what Joe Root needs, says Michael Vaughan

Former England Test captain Michael Vaughan believes Joe Root's return to the helm is precisely the motivation the star batter needs at this stage of his career. Vaughan suggested on the Test Match Special podcast that the captaincy could reignite Root's passion for Test cricket, especially as many of his long-time teammates have retired or moved on.

He posited that the captaincy might serve as a crucial "trigger" or "motivational tool" for Root, who has played a significant amount of cricket and may need a new challenge to maintain his drive.

Root, who captained England from 2017 to 2022, stepped down citing the "toll" and "impact" the role had on him. His resignation followed a period of poor results, including a nine-match winless streak. He returns to the captaincy under interim head coach Marcus Trescothick, with Stephen Fleming slated to take over Test leadership for the upcoming winter tour of South Africa.

Vaughan also reflected on Root's previous tenure, suggesting he was dealt a "dodgy hand" due to circumstances like the focus on the 50-over World Cup and the challenges of captaining during the COVID-19 pandemic. He believes Fleming, appointed on a four-year deal, will provide valuable support, particularly in managing the dressing room and tactical aspects, allowing Root to focus on his batting and leadership.

With Fleming's appointment, Vaughan noted that managing director Rob Key has secured a "very experienced" coach. Fleming joins after a successful nine-season stint coaching the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Vaughan commented on the coaching search, suggesting Fleming was the "next best" option after Andy Flower reportedly ruled himself out of contention.
