Enjoy Giant Squid Fresh from the Sea... Goseong's Jeodo Giant Squid Festival Opens on the 12th

Goseong, located at the northernmost part of the East Coast, is set to host the 6th Jeodo Giant Squid Festival from June 12 to 14 at Daejin Port. This year's festival, themed 'Tangled Giant Squid, Appetizing Daejin Port!', celebrates the region's prized giant squid, known for its deep red skin and substantial size, often reaching up to 50 kg.

The festival highlights the giant squid primarily caught in the Jeodo fishing grounds, a military-controlled area just 1 km from North Korea, where fishing is permitted only from April to December. A unique feature of this event is the direct involvement of local residents in operating all 31 participating booths. These include nine experience booths, seven specialty product sales booths, seven flea markets, and eight Jeodo gourmet booths.

Visitors can savor various squid dishes, including boiled giant squid (sukhoe), squid soup (chobingsu), and squid and potato salad. The experience booths offer activities like making squid ceviche and crafting squid-shaped Gua Sha tools and keychains. The flea market will also feature local crafts and products.

To support local businesses, a "Spend and Get Receipt Back" event is running from June 5 to 14, offering a 5,000 won Goseong Love Gift Certificate for receipts from purchases made in Hyeonnae-myeon. The central stage will host squid-themed quizzes, auctions, and Goseong-specific competitions. Kim In-seop, Secretary General of the Goseong Cultural Foundation, emphasized the residents' leading role in planning and operating the festival, inviting attendees to enjoy the fresh giant squid caught by fishermen from the clean Jeodo fishing grounds.
