Enugu APC declares winners for 2027 senatorial primaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has successfully concluded its senatorial primary elections, paving the way for the 2027 National Assembly contests. The party announced Senator Osita Ngwu, Senator Kelvin Chukwu, and Chief Ikeje Asogwa as the victors for the Enugu West, Enugu East, and Enugu North Senatorial Districts, respectively. The results were declared at the APC State Secretariat in Enugu by the Chairman of the APC National Assembly Primary Elections Committee for Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Solomon Funkekeme.

Funkekeme lauded the party members for their commitment to a peaceful and orderly exercise across the state. He specifically praised Governor Peter Mbah for fostering an enabling environment that facilitated the smooth conduct of the primaries. The APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Ben Nwoye, also received commendation for his instrumental role in ensuring the process's success. "We’re satisfied with the conduct of the members of the party. The whole exercise went peacefully," Funkekeme stated, highlighting the disciplined participation of party faithful.

I commend the governor, Peter Mbah, for providing the enabling ground for this peaceful election. I also commend the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Ben Nwoye, for his efforts, as well as members of the party in the state for conducting themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner.

Announcing the specific results, Funkekeme detailed the votes garnered by the winners. Senator Ngwu secured the Enugu West ticket with 70,015 votes. In Enugu East, Kelvin Chukwu emerged victorious, defeating Nnaji Shalom Nwakaego with 111,743 votes to Nwakaego’s 482. For the Enugu North Senatorial District, Chief Ikeje Asogwa won with 125,089 votes out of 152,886 registered party members, surpassing other contestants like Dr. Ugo Ugwuanyi, Chinazo Eze, and Princess Edith Ugwuanyi.

We have come today to finalise what we started yesterday in the 260 wards for the senatorial election. Today, they’ve come to announce the results.

The APC State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, affirmed that these senatorial primaries marked the culmination of a process that began in the state's 260 wards. He noted that the same committee overseeing the House of Representatives primaries also managed the senatorial elections, with State House of Assembly, governorship, and presidential primaries slated for the following days. Speaking on behalf of the successful candidates, Senator Ngwu expressed gratitude for the support and confidence shown by party leaders and members, emphasizing Governor Mbah's role in promoting unity within the Enugu State APC.
