Enugu gov celebrates 13-year-old STEM Olympiad gold medallist

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has lauded 13-year-old Chimdiebube Onwubiko Victor for his exceptional performance at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy. Victor secured a gold medal in Mathematics and a silver medal in Science, marking a significant achievement for the young student and the state.

Yesterday, I welcomed Chimdiebube Onwubiko, our brilliant 13-year-old International STEM Olympiad champion, to the Lion Building after his remarkable performance in Rome, where he emerged with a Gold Medal in Mathematics and a Silver Medal in Science.

Governor Mbah shared the news on his social media accounts, describing Victor's accomplishment as a proud moment for both Enugu State and Nigeria. "Chimdiebube’s achievement is a proud moment for Enugu and a reflection of the power of discipline, dedication, and quality education," Mbah stated. He also extended commendations to Victor's Mathematics teacher, Chisom Unachukwu, and Evergreen Schools for their role in nurturing the young talent.

Victor was one of three Nigerian students who excelled at the Olympiad, which saw participation from over 150 countries. The competition, held from July 2 to 8, also recognized Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous for winning double gold medals in Mathematics and Science and being named the World’s Best in Science. Eleven-year-old Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan also earned a gold medal in Mathematics and was recognized as the World’s Best in Primary Mathematics.

Governor Mbah used the occasion to reaffirm his administration's commitment to enhancing the education sector through its Smart Green Schools initiative. "As we continue to transform education through the Smart Green Schools initiative, we remain committed to creating opportunities for every child in Enugu to discover their potential and become champions in their chosen fields," he said. This initiative aims to provide a conducive learning environment and opportunities for students to explore and excel in various academic fields.
