Enugu inaugurates three-man panel to investigate community crisis

Enugu State Government has formed a three-man advisory panel to investigate the ongoing crisis in the Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community. The panel, led by former Nigerian Bar Association Enugu Branch chairman Venatus Odo, with Helen Onyia as secretary and Professor Christian Obeagu as a member, aims to thoroughly and impartially examine the situation.

This action follows the suspension of the community's traditional ruler, Christopher Nyia, due to his alleged involvement in the lingering conflict. Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Egumgbe, emphasized that the committee's formation, approved by Governor Peter Mbah, is not a political maneuver but an advisory inquiry focused on uncovering the truth and restoring normalcy.

The government is not interested in witch-hunting anybody. What is important is that the panel conducts its assignment with fairness, transparency and in line with the principles of fair hearing.

The panel's mandate includes determining the immediate and remote causes of the crisis, scrutinizing the suspended ruler's actions and those of any other individuals connected to the breakdown of law and order. They are also expected to identify all involved parties and propose solutions for lasting peace. Egumgbe urged the committee to conduct its assignment with fairness and transparency, warning against any attempts to influence the investigation's outcome.

Mr. Odo, speaking for the panel, thanked the state government for its confidence and pledged to discharge their duties diligently, objectively, and without fear or favor. The committee has been directed to complete its investigation and submit its report within two weeks, ensuring a swift resolution to the community's unrest.
