Enugu Police Launch Crackdown on Traffic Offenders to Prevent Deaths

The Enugu State Police Command is initiating immediate and strict enforcement of traffic laws across the state, targeting motorists who disregard existing regulations.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the immediate enforcement of all existing traffic laws and regulations across the State following the rampant disregard for traffic regulations by motorists, which has resulted in avoidable gridlock, disruption of traffic flow, road crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.

This directive follows a surge in violations that have led to traffic gridlock, disrupted movement, road crashes, fatalities, and property damage. Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa stated the enforcement aligns with the Inspector-General of Police's nationwide order to restore order on Nigerian roads and safeguard lives and property.

Police officers will arrest and prosecute offenders. The command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the directive, emphasizing that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Legal Officer, and the State Traffic Officer are tasked with ensuring professional enforcement. Giwa cautioned officers against violating the rights and dignity of road users, stressing that enforcement must be lawful and professional.

The directive is in line with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directive on the nationwide enforcement of traffic laws to restore order on Nigerian roads and safeguard lives and property.

Motorists, including police and security personnel, are urged to familiarize themselves with and comply with traffic regulations to avoid legal consequences. The Commissioner reiterated that strict adherence to traffic laws is crucial for reducing congestion, preventing accidents, and ensuring the free flow of traffic throughout the state.
