Enugu seals four private hospitals

The Enugu State Government has taken decisive action by sealing four private hospitals in the Enugu North Local Government Area. The closures occurred on July 8, stemming from the facilities' failure to meet essential regulatory requirements. This move is part of a broader, intensified monitoring and supervision effort by the Ministry of Health, aimed at upholding standards in private healthcare facilities across the state.

Ministry spokeswoman Chidiogo Ugodu stated that the enforcement exercise was initiated by the Commissioner for Health, George Ugwu. A team led by the Director of Medical Services, Chinyere Ezeudu, conducted unscheduled inspections. Professor Ugwu emphasized that the exercise seeks to ensure all private hospitals and healthcare providers comply with statutory requirements, including the renewal of operating licenses and registration for facilities not yet documented by regulatory authorities.

Commissioner Ugwu reaffirmed the state government's commitment, under Governor Peter Mbah, to providing residents with access to safe, effective, and quality healthcare. He stressed that the supervision exercise will continue statewide to ensure only approved and compliant facilities offer services. This ongoing monitoring is viewed not just as a regulatory measure but as a critical step in strengthening the health system and protecting citizens' lives. The Ministry of Health had previously sealed three illegal health facilities in the Enugu South Local Government Area for operating without licenses.
