Environmental activist detained at border, questioned over sonic cannon simulation

Bojan Simišić, founder of the environmental group "Eko straža," was detained at the border after returning from a business trip and questioned by inspectors from the Directorate of Criminal Police's (UKP) anti-terrorism unit. "Eko straža" stated that the detention and questioning were related to the alleged staging of a sonic cannon simulation during a protest on March 15, 2025. Simišić reportedly provided a statement detailing his knowledge of the event, including references to media figures Dragan J. Vučićević and Vladimir Đukanović discussing the sonic cannon on Informer TV. He also mentioned an analysis by the Ear Shot organization. Simišić was released after giving his statement, and his phone was not confiscated. The group reported that both the inspectors and border police were courteous. The incident stems from a large gathering on March 15, 2025, organized by students in Belgrade. During a moment of silence for 15 victims of a canopy collapse in Novi Sad, a loud sound, described by attendees as similar to an aircraft or fast-moving vehicle, disrupted the event, causing panic. Authorities initially denied the use of any sonic weapon, but it was later revealed that police possess LRAD 450XL sonic cannons. The government, including President Aleksandar Vučić, has characterized claims of sonic weapon use as a deliberate attack on the state aimed at destabilization. The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade requested an investigation into documentation from student plenums that allegedly outlined plans for a "sonic cannon" simulation.
