Enzo Fernández Provides Assist in First Champions League Match for Manchester City

Enzo Fernández made an immediate mark in his first Champions League appearance for Manchester City, setting up Erling Haaland's opening goal in a 2-0 win over Porto in Portugal.

The Argentine midfielder joined the squad only a week ago and had made his City debut three days earlier. Against Porto, he again played a central role in a headed Haaland goal, this time delivering the assist. Haaland later completed the victory with a second goal near the end.

Fernández played the entire match and stood out for his decision-making and accurate passing. Although goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma currently wears the captain's armband, Fernández showed his authority on the field. At halftime, he was among the last players to leave, stopping to strongly protest to referee Szymon Marciniak and security officials.

He came close to adding a third goal in stoppage time. A free kick went just past one post, and moments later goalkeeper Diogo Costa tipped a long-range shot around the other side for a corner. Fernández reacted by holding his head and smiling before completing the match as planned.

His arrival at City has reunited him with manager Enzo Maresca, who gave him the captaincy while they were together at Chelsea and brought him to the club this month. Fernández had unexpectedly started City's 1-0 Premier League win over Coventry City after Nico O’Reilly was injured during the warm-up. Despite having only three training sessions with the group, he played 75 minutes and received an ovation from the fans. Against Porto, he also helped guide 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi, another recent signing.
