EPL: Liverpool target ex-Bournemouth coach Iraola

Liverpool is reportedly preparing to open formal talks with Andoni Iraola regarding the vacant head coach position. The move follows the unexpected departure of Arne Slot, who was dismissed just one year after guiding the club to the Premier League title.

Iraola, the former Bournemouth coach, has emerged as the leading candidate for the role. The 43-year-old Spaniard had a successful tenure with the Cherries, securing their highest-ever Premier League finish by placing sixth and qualifying for the Europa League. His team finished just three points behind Liverpool in the standings.

While Liverpool considered other managers, including Sebastian Hoeneß and Pierre Sage, Iraola is widely expected to be offered the job. He announced his departure from Bournemouth in April and has attracted interest from several European clubs. Liverpool's decision to pursue Iraola is reportedly driven by a desire for a more aggressive and high-intensity style of football, a hallmark of his coaching.

Richard Hughes, Liverpool's sporting director, has a prior working relationship with Iraola from his time as Bournemouth's technical director, a connection that could be significant in the appointment process. Despite qualifying for the Champions League, Liverpool had a comparatively disappointing league campaign last season, accumulating their lowest points tally since 2015-16.
