Esteban Mellino: From the popular Profesor Lambetain to writing national rock classics

Esteban Mellino, an artist whose memory is etched in the minds of many Argentines for his beloved character Profesor Lambetain, was far more than just a comedian. He was a multifaceted talent who pursued a lifelong passion for the arts as an actor, director, musician, and poet, leaving a significant mark on Argentina's cultural landscape.

Mellino's artistic journey began with a deep-seated love for music and acting. He grew up in Buenos Aires and initially pursued higher education in medicine and psychology but ultimately abandoned these paths to follow his heart into the arts. He honed his acting skills under the tutelage of Lee Strasberg and simultaneously developed his musical talents, playing various instruments and composing numerous songs. He was a key figure in the early Argentine rock scene, co-founding the pioneering band Alma y Vida with his brother Carlos Mellino, and contributing to classic songs like "Del gemido de un gorrión."

His transition to television in 1985 brought him national recognition through the character of Licenciado Diógenes Rubens Lambetain on Juan Alberto Badía's show "Badía & compañía." In this role, he provided humorous advice to callers, often subjected to elaborate pranks by the production team, such as water or smoke emerging from the telephone receiver. This character became a cultural phenomenon, making Mellino a household name.

Beyond his iconic comedic persona, Mellino's career spanned a wide array of television programs, including "Las clases del profesor Lambetain," "Re-Lambetain," and "Polémica en el bar," as well as several films such as "Las barras bravas" and "Loco posee la fórmula de la felicidad," which he also directed. Throughout his diverse career, Mellino consistently lived his passion, demonstrating a profound dedication to his craft and leaving behind a rich legacy in Argentine entertainment and music.
