Estonia's Social Minister Suggests Higher Tick Removal Fee at Regional Hospital

Estonian Social Affairs Minister Karmen Joller has proposed that the Põhja-Eesti Regionaalhaigla (PERH), a major regional hospital, should increase its fee for tick removal services. Joller suggested raising the price from the current 50 euros to 90 euros, drawing a comparison to the fees charged at veterinary clinics for similar procedures.

This suggestion comes in the context of new regulations implemented on April 1st at PERH's emergency medical department (EMO). These changes allow EMO staff to redirect patients with less severe health concerns, such as tick bites, to primary care physicians or pharmacists. Alternatively, patients seeking treatment for such issues at the EMO may be required to pay a fee for the service.

Minister Joller's comments, made during the podcast "Karmeni kabinet," indicate a potential shift in how minor medical services are handled and potentially funded within the public healthcare system. By suggesting a fee increase for tick removal at PERH to match veterinary charges, she implies a move towards cost recovery or a re-evaluation of service pricing for non-emergency, straightforward procedures.
