Estonian presidential election: Candidate nominations can still use separate signed sheets despite rule changes

Estonia's presidential election process is set to proceed under updated regulations, though a long-standing practice for candidate nominations will remain in place. The changes, enacted earlier this year, aim to modernize the procedures for putting forward candidates for the nation's highest office.

Under the revised rules, individuals or groups wishing to nominate a presidential candidate must submit a written proposal to the election commission. Crucially, this submission can still be comprised of multiple separate sheets, each bearing the required signatures of the nominators. This flexibility ensures that broad support can be demonstrated even with a decentralized nomination effort.

Furthermore, the updated regulations explicitly permit the inclusion of digitally signed nomination sheets. This acknowledges the increasing prevalence of digital communication and documentation in official processes. The combination of physical and digital signatures on separate sheets offers a hybrid approach to candidate verification, accommodating various methods of support collection.
