Ethiopian Jewish activist calls for unity in Israel

Dr. Shmuel Legesse, an Ethiopian Jewish writer and activist, articulated his life's mission as a call to foster Jewish unity, defend Israel's legitimacy, and amplify the Ethiopian Jewish experience. In a conversation on The Jerusalem Post podcast, Legesse recounted how his father's childhood blessings in Ethiopia, foretelling he would "speak to the whole world" for his people, later guided him after moving to the US and encountering the broader Jewish world.

Legesse shared his experiences navigating American Jewish communities, where he often felt compelled to justify his identity before finding acceptance. While crediting supportive rabbis and leaders, he stressed the necessity for greater inter-community understanding. Upon returning to Israel with his family before October 7, the Hamas attacks intensified his conviction in the need for stronger internal Israeli unity and a more assertive Jewish voice globally.

Addressing the Ethiopian Israeli community, Legesse acknowledged the need for honest dialogue about racism and social disparities, framing it within shared responsibility. He cited the high rate of military service among Ethiopian Israelis as proof of their deep commitment to Zionism. The activist also touched upon politics, including a past invitation from Jonathan Pollard to collaborate, stating he views leadership as service rather than personal ambition. Legesse criticized singular leadership models, advocating for a broader right-wing leadership rooted in Jewish values, mutual respect, and national service. His central message remained consistent: Israeli society must find common ground without compromising the distinct identities, traditions, or values of any Jewish group.
