Etimesgut Mayor Erdal Beşikçioğlu Detained in Corruption Probe

Erdal Beşikçioğlu, the newly elected Mayor of Etimesgut in Ankara, has been detained along with 54 other individuals as part of a significant investigation into alleged bribery and corruption within the municipality. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is leading the probe.

Beşikçioğlu, who transitioned from a successful acting career to politics, won the Etimesgut mayoral seat in the March 31, 2024 local elections representing the Republican People's Party (CHP). He received his certificate of election on April 4 and assumed office shortly thereafter. The current detentions involve allegations of 'bribery' and 'corruption' directed at the Etimesgut Municipality.

Among those detained are several deputy mayors, including Taylan Özgüven, İhsan Bahri Bellek, and Atilla Akyürek. The detentions mark a serious development for the local administration, casting a shadow over Beşikçioğlu's tenure just months after taking office. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to uncover the extent of the alleged illicit activities within the municipality.
