EU and Morocco Expand Partnership to New Sectors, Including Renewables and Digitalization

The European Union is deepening its strategic partnership with Morocco, signaling a new era of cooperation that extends beyond traditional trade agreements. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas highlighted the expansion into promising new sectors such as digitalization, renewable energy, and innovation, emphasizing that these advancements will benefit both European and Moroccan citizens.

Kallas specifically addressed the sensitive issue of tariff preferences for products originating from the Sahara. She clarified that the extension of these preferences is carefully aligned with a European Court of Justice ruling, ensuring a transparent, legally coherent, and business-friendly framework. This move demonstrates the EU's commitment to navigating complex legal and political landscapes while fostering economic ties.

On the crucial matter of the Sahara's territorial status, Kallas reiterated the EU's unwavering support for United Nations-led initiatives aimed at achieving a just and mutually acceptable political solution. The EU's recognition of Morocco as a "necessary and important partner" is further solidified by the "Charter for the Mediterranean" initiative. This framework aims to mobilize significant European investment for over 100 projects across the Mediterranean region, fostering equitable and robust partnerships. Kallas stressed that this initiative is a collaborative effort, with ideas originating from high-level discussions hosted by Morocco, reflecting a genuine commitment to shared prosperity and stability. The EU's approach emphasizes building stronger, more equal partnerships, moving beyond a one-way export of policies to a truly co-designed framework for regional development.
