EU and UK agree on major arms financing for Ukraine: a 90 billion euro challenge

The European Union Council has given the green light for the United Kingdom to join a loan facility aimed at supporting Ukraine. This decision allows Ukraine to procure defense equipment from defense industry companies based in the UK, in addition to those in EU and European Economic Area (EEA) countries.

Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee, who holds the rotating EU Council presidency, stated that the approval reflects a "common determination" between the EU and the UK. She emphasized their shared commitment to supporting Ukraine "for as long as it takes" to end Russia's "illegal war of aggression" and establish a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace."

The UK's participation was approved by member states after it met the three stipulated conditions for third countries to be included in the program. The decision will be formally adopted through a written procedure and will come into force once published in the EU Official Journal.
