EU, Australia, New Zealand Criticize New U.S. Tariffs

New U.S. tariffs targeting approximately 60 international trading partners have drawn sharp criticism from key global allies, including the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand.

EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas described the tariffs as a "shock" to the bloc, stating that the U.S. government's rationale for the measures is incomprehensible. The tariffs, ranging from 10 to 12.5 percent, went into effect on Friday, adding to an existing 10 percent global tariff on U.S. imports.

Australia's Trade Minister Don Farrell declared the tariffs "unjustified" and in direct contradiction to the nations' free trade agreement, demanding their immediate abolition. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon echoed this sentiment, calling the U.S. announcement "extremely disappointing" and warning that tariffs increase costs and create business uncertainty.
