EU Office in Kosovo Demands Probe into Police Misconduct

The European Union Office in Kosovo has called for a thorough investigation into alleged instances of unprofessional conduct by the Kosovo Police. Eva Palatova, acting head of the EU Office, conveyed this expectation during a meeting with Kosovo's Minister of Internal Affairs, Dželjalj Svečlja.

Palatova emphasized the importance of Kosovo's institutions upholding the rule of law and respecting multi-ethnicity. She stated that the EU expects alleged cases of police misconduct to be investigated and any demolitions of property to be carried out strictly in accordance with legal procedures and regulations. "The Union expects that alleged cases of unprofessional conduct by the Kosovo Police be investigated, as well as that any demolitions of objects be carried out in accordance with the law and prescribed procedures," Palatova said.

While the EU supports Kosovo's European path, Palatova stressed that Kosovo must fulfill its obligations. The Kosovo Police Inspectorate has already recommended the suspension of two police officers from the Regional Police Directorate in North Mitrovica. This recommendation stems from suspicions of criminal acts related to abuse of office or authority during an incident that resulted in severe injuries to Nenad Rašković, a Serb villager from the village of Dren.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions and the need for accountability within law enforcement. The EU's stance underscores the importance of professional policing and adherence to legal frameworks as Kosovo progresses towards closer integration with European structures.
