EU official: Bloc's environmental rules are non-negotiable for Mercosur trade deal

European Union environmental and sanitary regulations are firm and will not be subject to negotiation within the Mercosur-EU trade agreement, according to an EU official. Inmaculada Montero Luque, the commercial counselor for the EU Delegation in Argentina, emphasized that these standards are integral to the bloc's political strategy and identity.

She added that the fight against climate change and the defense of sustainable production are "in our DNA" and that Europe aims to be an international leader in these areas.

While Montero acknowledged that these regulations spark debate even within the EU, she maintained their non-negotiable status. "We cannot negotiate that," she asserted. The EU official also noted that Argentina holds an advantage among Mercosur partners due to its advancements in traceability and sustainability.

Argentine officials, including Agustín Tejeda, Undersecretary of Agribusiness Markets and International Insertion, share the EU's environmental protection goals but express concerns about how these regulations are implemented. They question whether these standards could become obstacles to trade, potentially limiting the benefits of the agreement. The EU's firm stance on its environmental rules highlights a key challenge for Argentina and other Mercosur members as they seek to capitalize on the trade deal.
