EU simplifies voting for its citizens living abroad

European Union citizens residing in a member state different from their country of birth will soon find it easier to participate in local elections. The EU Council has approved new regulations designed to streamline the process for these "mobile Union citizens," who numbered 14 million at the start of 2024, according to Eurostat. The core of the new rules focuses on enhancing information dissemination. EU citizens living abroad will now be actively informed about their electoral rights and the necessary registration procedures in their country of residence. This information will be provided in multiple widely spoken EU languages, aiming to overcome language barriers that may have previously hindered participation. Furthermore, the regulations address concerns about being disenfranchised. An EU citizen who registers to vote in another member state will no longer be automatically removed from their home country's electoral register. This change ensures that individuals retain their connection to their country of origin's electoral system while exercising their right to vote locally. Under current EU law, citizens living in another member state can participate in local elections under the same conditions as nationals of that state, including both active and passive voting rights. The new measures are expected to increase the political engagement of mobile EU citizens and strengthen the democratic fabric across the bloc.
