EU urges Kosovo to halt Gazivode demolitions pending resolution

The European Union has voiced concern regarding the demolition of structures in the Gazivode Lake area, particularly as property rights issues remain under judicial review. The EU is calling on Kosovo's institutions to cease further demolitions and to work collaboratively with the population and local authorities to find a lawful and sustainable resolution.

A spokesperson for the EU emphasized that any irreversible step, including demolitions, should be suspended until a final decision is made by the competent court regarding the unresolved claims. This call aims to prevent actions that could complicate or prejudice the legal process.

The EU also stated that if demolitions were indeed carried out without the proper administrative and legal procedures, it would represent a serious breach of the rule of law. Reports suggest that the demolitions may have occurred without adequate guarantees, such as clear notification, reasoned decisions, and effective avenues for appeal or legal recourse.

In a specific incident, the "Jezero" motel near Gazivode was reportedly demolished after workers from the "Ibar-Lepenci" company and Kosovo police entered the premises and informed the owners to vacate. Representatives from EULEX and KFOR were present during the demolition.
