Europe needs more global initiatives

Europe will need new partners beyond its existing circles if it wants to preserve the values of human rights and solidarity, Oliver Rathkolb argues.

The argument follows this year’s European Forum Alpbach, held under the responsibility of Othmar Karas, a former first vice president of the European Parliament. Five European heads of state met at the forum, whose theme was “How Europe Wins.”

The gathering produced a broad range of ideas and proposals, but also numerous critical analyses of the future of parliamentary democracy and the European Union’s social structure. For Rathkolb, that debate points toward a need for Europe to pursue more global initiatives and broaden its cooperation.
